This lei is so intricate to make – very tedious, requiring a lot of time and patience. Cigar leis are considered to be a masculine type of lei; therefore, generally worn by men. The tiny orange tubular flowers are thought to look like miniature lighted cigars tipped with white ash; hence, “cigar.” Leis made with cigar flowers were not popular until the early 1900’s. However, cigar plants were found in Hawaiian gardens around 25 years prior. Hawaiian mothers would gather the tiny flowers from small shrubs and string cigar leis for their sons to celebrate special occasions.

Round stringing method:

Hundreds of individual flowers are carefully pierced and strung laterally. They’re arranged crosswise to create a rounded form and spiral design. The lei is mixed with kukui nuts and mock orange leaves.

Early Hawaiians didn’t have steel needles, so they used a piece of the smooth round midrib of the coconut leaf or stems of flowers from native grasses. For string, they used fibers from the native olona shrub or the hala tree.

    I wanted something special for my husband’s birthday and I definitely made the right choice! The purple orchid leis seemed like the most popular leis being given at the airport. So when my husband got this one, it really seemed more special.

    this lei in person is amazing! it’s made of thousands of little seeds…I think theyre seeds. it’s obvious someone took a lot of time to make this.
