The tuberose gets it’s name from its tuberous nature. While it grows in Hawai‘i, it’s a member of the amaryllis family, native to Mexico. This flower is usually abundant throughout the year.
Dendrobium orchids are native to Asia and the Pacific Islands. There are a thousand species of Dendrobiums. Some were used exclusively by orchidists in Hawai’i, France, and Thailand to create hybrids that are still used.
Straight stringing method:
kui pololei
This is the most common method of lei making. The flowers are pierced lengthwise, through the center, using a long steel needle. The flowers are held together by a single string. Tuberoses and orchids are strung in an alternating pattern.
Early Hawaiians didn’t have steel needles, so they used a piece of the smooth round midrib of the coconut leaf or stems of flowers from native grasses. For string, they used fibers from the native olona shrub or the hala tree.
