history

history

The tuberose gets it’s name from its tuberous nature. While it grows in Hawai‘i, it’s a member of the amaryllis family, native to Mexico. This flower is usually abundant throughout the year.

Dendrobium orchids are native to Asia and the Pacific Islands. There are a thousand species of Dendrobiums. Some were used exclusively by orchidists in Hawai‘i, France, and Thailand to create hybrids that are still used.

Round stringing method:
kui poepoe

The bottom of the flowers are pierced and strung laterally with petals facing outward. They’re arranged in a crosswise position to create a rounded appearance. Tuberose and orchids are strung in an alternating pattern.

ancient materials

ancient materials

Early Hawaiians didn’t have steel needles, so they used a piece of the smooth round midrib of the coconut leaf or stems of flowers from native grasses. For string, they used fibers from the native olona shrub or the hala tree.

I ordered the Deluxe Lei for my son and this Double Tuberose Orchid Lei for his fiancée. The leis were so nice they wore it on their wedding day on the beach!

  3. Chelsie

This smelt incredible! It does seem like a ‘fancier’ lei because you can tell it took time to make.

  4. Chelsie

I was hesitant to order this one because I was worried the scent would be too much for my wife, but it was very sweet. It sure did put a smile on her face.

I get why it’s considered a Specialty Greeting. It seems like everyone gets the orchid lei, so we stood out with these leis. We felt extra special 🙂

The whole experience was worth it! The lei was gorgeous, the greeter was friendly, and we felt very welcomed. We felt the ALOHA!
