Dendrobium orchids are native to Asia and the Pacific Islands. There are a thousand species of Dendrobiums. Some were used exclusively by orchidists in Hawai‘i, France, and Thailand to create hybrids that are still used. Orchids also come in a variety of colors, with purple being most common.

The bottom of the flowers are pierced and strung laterally with petals facing outward. They’re arranged in a crosswise position to create a rounded appearance.

Early Hawaiians didn’t have steel needles, so they used a piece of the smooth round midrib of the coconut leaf or stems of flowers from native grasses. For string, they used fibers from the native olona shrub or the hala tree.

    I went to Hawaii with a large group of friends and family for my brother’s wedding. We got leis for our whole party (I’m talking 30 people!), but we wanted wanted to do something bigger for the bride & groom. These leis were much bigger! They stood out in our group pics. The special order was well worth it!

    I got the regular orchid lei for myself and 2 deluxe leis for my parents – there was a big difference between theirs and mine. Hands down an upgraded lei! Mine was still fresh and beautiful.

    Fresh flowers! The flowers are so fresh and real! The greeting was welcoming, warm, and sweet. The girl giving us our lei was extremely nice and helpful. She helped us find our way to the baggage carousel and the rental cars. That can be confusing sometimes!

    First of all, I loved these leis, but I wish it was scented. It smells like a plant, but there’s no perfume scent. I did want something big for my husband and I, so I went with this option. It’s still a very nice lei.
